Chasing the Northern Lights in Lapland

When people think of Finland, they imagine endless forests, snow-covered landscapes, and perhaps a sauna or two, maybe a Frozen castle. But there’s one experience that turns Finland from “beautiful” into “pleeeeaaase God let me have the money to go there” and that, my friends, is chasing the Northern Lights in Lapland, because if that’s not the most interesting thing in Finland, nothing is.

This Lapland place, aside from being Santa’s home, is also the northernmost region of Finland, and one of the best places in the world to witness the Aurora Borealis, and considering how cool Finland is, it’s basically the best. From late August to early April, the dark skies here light up with shifting curtains of green, purple, and pink. It’s not just the lights themselves that make it magical, obviously it’s mostly the setting. You could be watching them from a reindeer sleigh ride, a snowmobile safari (sick name), or even your own glass-roofed igloo hotel, or just a 20 minute walk away from your reasonably priced lodging. To be fair though, there aren’t many things THAT affordable in the Nordic countries. Where to Go to Enjoy the Most Interesting Activity in Finland

The town of Rovaniemi is the easiest gateway, offering guided tours for every type of traveler. If you want something more remote (and less light pollution), head to Saariselkä or Inari for near-perfect viewing conditions. And unlike some destinations where aurora hunting means standing in one frozen spot for hours, here you can turn it into an adventure, combining the chase with husky sledding(doggies!!), ice fishing, or even overnight stays in wilderness cabins.

If you’re into a blend of comfort and adventure, Finnish Lapland makes it easy to enjoy both. You can spend your days snowshoeing through untouched forests, relaxing in a traditional smoke sauna, and sampling local delicacies like sautéed reindeer with lingonberries. What I’m trying to say is, if a loved one is pushing for adventurous nature chasing, be not afraid, for there will be bougieness underway too. But then the night falls, you simply step outside to see if the sky is performing its nightly magic. Even on nights when the lights don’t appear, the quiet beauty of Lapland’s winter landscape makes the wait worth it.

Seeing the Northern Lights here isn’t just an activity, it’s a full immersion into Finland’s wild beauty and Arctic culture. It feels like you’re part of a cosmic show that most people only see in photographs, and once you’ve witnessed it for yourself, you’ll understand why people return again and again to this frozen heaven.

If your heart says Thailand but your passport or budget says Europe, don’t worry there are more than a few destinations on this side of the world that bring that same exotic energy. We’re talking hidden beaches, limestone cliffs, turquoise water, and even the occasional jungle vibe. Here’s where to go when you want Europe to feel like Southeast Asia or like in some other tropical paradise, at least for a little while.

Algarve Sea Caves – Portugal

The Algarve coastline boasts some utterly crazy limestone cliffs and hidden sea caves out of Krabi. Paddle or boat into Benagil Cave, it’s Phi Phi Islands but with pastel-topped houses and custard tarts nearby. What’s not to love? It’s even right by the Atlantic, so you can have a shorter flight, feel at home but still somewhere totally different.

Where in Europe is like Thailand?

Ksamil – Albania

Turquoise sea, white sand, little islands nearby, full tropical archipelago lookalike situation, Ksamil has all the ingredients of a Thai island without the long flight. The beaches are remarkably unspoiled, the prices are low, and the water is basically live Photoshopped. It is a recent favorite with tourists wanting something different. Bonus for Eastern is generally cheaper.

Calanques National Park – South of France

For a slice of tropical-meets-Mediterranean, head to the Calanques between Marseille and Cassis. These steep, forest-covered inlets carved into the coastline feel like hidden Thai coves. You’ll need to hike or boat to reach some of them, but the blue-green water is absolutely worth the effort, also, hikes are just cool. If you like the idea of France, keep in mind that there’s more to do in the South than just Calanques, check those other spots out too.

Mljet Island – Croatia

Shaded by pine forests and rimmed by that telltale Adriatic blue, Mljet is an island jungle getaway. It’s got a national park with seawater lakes and peaceful trails, no full moon raves here, but loads of peace, swimming, and wildlife. Again, I just love hiking in pretty places, but if that’s not your cup of tea, there’s still everything else there, also, Eastern Europe is cheap(er).

Elafonissi Beach – Crete, Greece

With crystal shallows and pink sand, Elafonissi is not your typical Greek beach. It’s more tropical lagoon feel, especially when the sandbar emerges at low tide. You may be in Greece but it looks like somewhere off the coast of Phuket. And since you’re in the land of the gods, you can again, island-hop like you’re in Indonesia, do it like you’re in Bali. If you’re curious abou other great Greek beaches, look no further.

La Gomera – Canary Islands, Spain

If you’re craving the rainforest, green vibe in the tropical East, La Gomera brings those lush vibes. With misty valleys, deep green forests, and barely-touched beaches, it’s an under-the-radar option for travelers who want something wilder than the usual beach town. To be fair, it’ll run you a pretty penny, but honestly, you get your nature blast, tropical holiday time, and a Spain vacay, it’s like knocking 2 birds with one stone. If Spain is your cup of tea, there’s another region that might strike your fancy, especially if rocky, mountain, warm, village, museum and culture are your dram keywords.

If you’re traveling to Tunisia and stuck deciding between Sousse and Hammamet, you’re not the only one. They’re both favorite Mediterranean getaways, but which is right for you? Here’s the lowdown on each, taking into account the ease of getting there, tourist spots, costs, options, and security. So stick around to find out if Hammamet or Sousse is better.

Getting There: Sousse Is Closer to an Airport

Sousse is closer to Monastir Habib Bourguiba Airport, just a 25-minute taxi ride away, and well connected by train and louage vans (shared taxis). Hammamet, on the other hand, is roughly an hour from Tunis-Carthage Airport, and while it’s still easy to reach, traffic can get heavy near the capital. If you’re not renting a car, Sousse is just a bit simpler logistically.

Tourist Sites: Sousse More History, Hammamet More Leisure

Sousse boasts a UNESCO-listed medina, ancient crumbling walls, and the Ribat fortress — you can stroll back centuries here. They also have a decent museum housed in a kasbah and the option to hop over to El Jem for the Roman amphitheater.
Hammamet is all about the beach resort atmosphere, with less big historical sites but plenty of seaside charm, gardens, and spas. There will be more contemporary art and architecture here (from artists adoring the region), but not as much in terms of ancient ruins.

Price: It’s Close, But Hammamet Can Be Cheaper

They are both cheaper compared to Western beach resorts,, but Hammamet is a superior value all-inclusive resort area, especially for European package tourists. Sousse is more diverse, ranging from budget guesthouses to luxury hotels, but daily costs like eating and taxis are slightly more expensive.

Sousse is an actual town, and there are local eateries, nightlife, markets, and chain hotels accompanied by family-run guesthouses. If you want something more local but with tourist facilities, Sousse fits the bill.
Hammamet is less populous and more relaxed. It’s got resorts, seafront hotels, and some nice boutique properties. Nightlife and eating out are very resort-based, but there are a couple of stand-out independents if you venture into Hammamet Medina.

Both resorts are relatively safe, particularly in touristy areas. Sousse is more populated and urbanized, so petty stealing is something to be aware of in busy areas such as the medina or train stations. Hammamet, while more tourist-oriented, is more relaxed though tour/taxi scams remain an issue. Single women travelers find both safe enough, though dressing modestly is always a good idea off resort property.

If you want culture, city life, and sightseeing along with your beach activities, choose Sousse.

Wander Gamla Stan in Stockholm

Start your trip with a stroll through Stockholm’s old town, Gamla Stan, where cobbled streets lead to pastel buildings and centuries-old cafes. Visit the Royal Palace, peek inside Storkyrkan Cathedral, and grab a fika (coffee + pastry) at Café Schweizer. This is Stockholm’s postcard side, and it delivers. It’s something so easy to do, yet it’s definitely a “must-visit” spot in Sweden.

Kayak the Stockholm Archipelago

Does this seem pretty boring so far? Well, our first two points are meant as an early guide of what to do when you’ve just gotten to Sweden, because as our top-ranked Scandinavian country, its capital is also a strong suit worth visiting. And please, paddling around is something active but serene, rent a kayak and paddle out into the Stockholm Archipelago, thousands of islands, some barely more than a rock with a tree on it. There are even companies that offer multi-day kayaking tours with wild camping or stays in rustic cottages. But you can, of course, choose to do this at your own pace, not wind up too far, anything you want, really.

Vaxholm City Islands

Vaxholm is a city that spans two islands, Vaxön and Kullö(doesn’t that just sound cool?) it’s easy to reach via ferry and absolutely beautiful. The houses are colorful, and the way life bends when you live surrounded by water, aided by water, and limited by water is fascinating and totally worth living for at least a day trip. It even has a fortress you can explore! It’s great to introduce you to the Archipelago if kayaking far out isn’t your cup of tea.

Visit the Treehotel in Harads (Lapland)

Looking for a unique stay? Doesn’t matter, because if you’re visiting Santa’s homeland, Lapland, you can afford a few hours for Harads’Treehotel in Harads, where each treehouse is a work of art, come on, there’s a mirror cube, a UFO, even a bird’s nest. It’s in northern Sweden, so combine it with other Lapland stops for a nature-filled escape. Book a night even, it’s be the whimsy of your trip.

Road Trip through Dalarna

Dalarna is that scenic, rural Sweden you imagine from folk art, like the pretty paintings, yes, red cottages, lakes, pine forests. Rent a car and drive through towns like Rättvik and Mora, stop to buy a wooden Dala horse, and take a dip in Lake Siljan. It’s especially beautiful in early summer, especially if freezing isn’t your fave thing. It’s also not too far from Stockholm, it being the County to the West and all, it also borders Norway if you’re feeling like your Eurotrip should extend past Sweden’s borders.

Cali gets all the spotlight (and for worthy reasons, there are some amazing beaches in California), and luckily, most of the beach-seekers, which leaves moody Oregon wide open, not crowded, better priced, and less polluted than its Southern counterpart. If you know that, you’re already a step ahead of the others, but stay to find out which beaches are actually the best in Oregon. If you’re not sure you want to pick Oregon yet, we’ve got a list of the best beaches on the whole West Coast!

Secret Beach

Yes, yes, actually called Secret Beach, and yes, it feels hidden, or at least it has an “our special spot” vibe, like you’ve stumbled onto an unclaimed land. It’s located on the southern Oregon coast near the California border, and getting there involves a short, slightly steep trail, but the reward is a cove-like beach with arches, cliffs, and that isolated, magic-hour energy. The beach is somewhere South of Brookings, you can indeed swim, there’s quite a bit of shallow water, but preferably, pick low-tide hours and be prepared for not-the-warmest water out there.

Cape Kiwanda

This one’s for people who like a little action. It’s got giant sand dunes you can hike (or tumble) down, great surfing, and even better sunset views from the sandstone cliffs. Nearby Pacific City is way more low-key than Cannon but still has breweries and beach town vibes. Go if you love aesthetic and fun places, it’s a great spot for friend groups to frolic and have fun at, and take jaw-dropping pics later, this may just be the best Oregon beach for you.

Is this not the most well known beach in Oregon? I feel like it has to be. And come on, you’ve seen Haystack Rock in every travel magazine and Instagram post. The beach is broad and walkable, and the town itself is cute, upscale, and full of art galleries and cozy cafés. If you only visit one Oregon beach, this is the classic. For good reason too, it does hit all spots, good for anyone, but may be pricey, so budget carefully, oh, and tell us if you need tips!

Manzanita

A chill alternative to Cannon Beach, Manzanita is peaceful and scenic without all the tourists. There’s a small town with just enough to explore, and the beach is huge, backed by forested hills and often misty skies that feel straight out of a moody indie film. Wanna be cool, different, and actually have a good time? This is the place for your unique experience.

Nye Beach

If you want beach plus town, Newport’s Nye Beach offers both. The historic district has galleries, coffee shops, and cozy places to stay. You’ll also be near the Oregon Coast Aquarium and the famous Yaquina Head Lighthouse if you want extra activities. Great for going with kids, making sand castles, preferably not splashing in water right now, considering the fecal bacteria overload going about but, surely that will be resolved in time for your trip, read news articles!

If you are traveling to Africa for the essence of it, i.e., music, markets, street food, village towns, and oral traditions of storytelling, give it as much time as you can. A quality cultural odyssey takes space to breathe. In nations like Morocco, Ghana, Ethiopia, or Zimbabwe, or Tunisia, you’ll require at least 14 to 21 days for city and village visitations. That leaves you space to take a cooking class, ride a local bus, or consent to the kind of random side excursions that turn out to be the greatest memories. If you really want to connect with the way of life of others, you can’t expect to truly do so in a 3-day touristy excursion, allow it time.

For Wildife Sighting/Safari – 7t o 12 Days

If you’re going to Africa as a nature enthusiast, a week or more should be enough, the exact number of days is up to you. After all, an excellent safari does not last a month, but neither is it a weekend adventure. If you are in Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, or South Africa, 7 to 10 days is the way to go. That leaves you free to visit 2 or 3 reserves or national parks without a sense of hurry. A day or so of relaxation at a beach or lodge after mid-morning game drives for some tourists is an excellent decision.

If your thing is poolside cocktails, high-thread-count sheets(don’t look down on thread count anything around 500 already feels like heaven), hammam spas, or luxury beachfronts, you don’t require an eternity. A 5 to 7-day resort holiday in Mauritius, Zanzibar, Djerba, or even a vineyard stay nearer Cape Town will get you a full reboot. Factor in an extra day if your resort includes optional cultural or wildlife excursions. Or factor in a bunch more days if you like to poolside tan like a cat likes to nap on a sunny windowsill, personally, I’d rather tear my hair out than be at that kind of resort for too long, my less than 500 thread count sheets are perfectly fine, thank you very much. But since you needed to know how long your trip to Africa should be, in this case, a week will do you good.

Best time to visit: Senegal, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and Benin

As was the case above, dry season is best for some places. The humidity is lower, the roads are more stable, and cultural events like Ghana’s Afrochella or Benin’s Vodun Festival become real. Earlier than that and you are dodging tropical rainstorms, just nnoying, plan ruining rain in general.

December to February – Also Great for Central Africa

Best time to go to: Cameroon, Gabon, Central African Republic, or Congo

For the same reason as most of the above, late dry season (Dec–Feb) is the most manageable. Trails are more passable, and gorilla treks or rainforest hikes are less of a mud-fest. That’s not to say rain season is just a major buzz kill, but the much harder travel, the possibility of floods and even sickness doesn’t make it as appealing a time for travel, that’s what makes winter months the best for Africa.

If you’re going to Tunisia, don’t flake out on it’s awesome capital, there’s no rush getting to your beach resort of choice. To give you a hand we have made a list of the best places to visit in Tunis to go along with our preexisting ultimate Tunisia guide.

The Medina of Tunis

You simply cannot NOT go, you cannot NOT include it in the best places to visit in Tunis list! A UNESCO World Heritage site and the heart of the city, the Medina is a maze of narrow alleyways packed with centuries-old mosques, colorful shops, and hidden courtyards. You could spend hours wandering without a plan and still discover something magical around every turn. It’s so culturally rich that you’ll leave feeling like you’ve only just now been born into the world anew.

What to see in Tunis

Avenue Habib Bourguiba

You can call it the Champs-Élysées of Tunis, this wide, palm-lined avenue is full of cafés, French colonial architecture, and energy. It’s a great place for people-watching, grabbing an espresso, or just taking in the contrast between old and modern Tunisia. Otherwise, it’s a great experience, see how the people are fairing in the city, though the view won’t do much to cover the reality of more rural areas, that’s something you’ll have to go looking for, but meanwhile, sip a chai latte.

Belvédère Park

The name itself does wonders to remind you of how much the French influenced Tunisia, alas, here you can take a break from the bustle by heading to this green space overlooking the city. It’s home to the Tunis Zoo, but even if you skip that, the park itself is perfect for a quiet walk, picnic, or panoramic view of the skyline. Or a nap, honestly, or maybe I’m the only one sleeping on picnic blankets. Regardless, it’s a well-loved park and a calming place to behold while keeping up with a packed itinerary.

Dar El Jeld (Restaurant & Hotel)

Hidden in the Medina, this is the spot if you want luxury with old-world vibes. The restaurant is all marble and lanterns, and the boutique hotel upstairs is one of the most elegant stays in the city. The good news? It still retains that “I’m not selling a kidney” vibe, it doesn’t feel like you’re being overly pompous by staying there while also serving you with a heaping ton of quiet luxury.

Tunis City Mall

No city trip is complete without a little mall hangout, and this is the largest and most modern mall in the capital, think global clothing brands, electronics, cafés, and a food court for when you need a break from couscous. Locals flock here for weekend shopping, movies, or just strolling in the AC. It’s not exactly cultural immersion, but if you want Zara and WiFi, it delivers. Don’t look down on the place, the AC, convenient stores for your various needs, along with clean, fresh linen-smelling corridors, really do it for the tired traveler.

Berges du Lac District

Since you’ve been spending your days strolling the medina, immersing in lux-meets-old-world places and mosques, it’s time to acquaint yourself with the relatively new, bougie district (neighborhood) of Berges du Lac. It has a billion embassies, international coffee chains, and sleek office buildings. It’s where a lot of expats and wealthier locals hang out and work. Just overall city life in this cultural heaven.

Bardo National Museum

To quench some thirst for Roman, Islamic and everything from A-Z when it comes tu Tunisian History thirst.

Have you been to London before? Yes? No? Maybe so? Alas, you might need a refresh on what you actually need to pack to see the Brit friends across the Atlantic. Of course we’re coming in clutch with our London packing list.

Packing List for London Essential, a Compact Umbrella You’ll Actually Use

No one needs to tell you that it’s raining like the dickens in the misty British Isles, but what you might need a reminder of is how convenient high-quality, well-built items actually are. Chuck in an extra 6 bucks and get a sturdy rain stopper so you can be prepared for the downpour. Enjoy, no need to thank me.

Stylish but Weather-Friendly Footwear

Similar to what you might need for other big cities, a pair of versatile shoes is a must, especially if you’re not staying long, don’t pack extra shoes, just pick the right pair for the whole trip and or buy yourself a souvenir pair of sneakers when you’re there. hoose shoes that are good for cobblestones and sudden puddles but still look decent in a museum or pub.

UK Plug Adapter and Portable Charger

Beep-beep, this is your reminder that their plugs are different from other places. London runs on Type G plugs and your phone will be working overtime with maps, tickets, and photos of moody skies and beautiful buildings. Bring an adapter so you don’t have to do the awkward “can I borrow one?” moment in the reception of your lodging.

A Water Bottle with a Filter Option, or Without it, a Good Bottle Will Do too

Tap water is safe and the city is dotted with refill stations, so bringing a reusable bottle is both eco-friendly and practical. A built-in filter is a nice extra if you’ll be popping into parks or heading out on a day trip. Personally I like the extra safety of a filter, but just a nice, maybe insulated bottle will do, ah, cold ice water/hot tea.

A Few Solid Offline Essentials

Honestly, these are nice for any place, maybe you left your power bank in the hotel room and don’t want your vanished-into-thin-air percentages of battery to be spent on Block Blast. Keep a few things on hand that don’t rely on Wi-Fi and or battery, maybe a book, downloaded maps(if your issue is connection), or even that travel journal you promised yourself you’d start writing in. Now’s your chance.
