1. The Capital, Ciudad de Mexico
The beating heart of the country, CDMX is a mix of prehistoric ruins, colonial grandeur, and über-contemporary culture. Amble about the Zócalo, climb the Templo Mayor, sip coffee in Condesa, drink in the likes of Museo Frida Kahlo or Museo Nacional de Antropología, and dine like royalty from tacos al pastor to fine dining.

2. Go to Oaxaca de Juárez, or Oaxaca City for You Colonizers
A lively, walking city with a local culture, genuine crafts, and unforgettable cuisine. Wander through mole and tlayudas markets, visit the pre-Columbian ruins of Monte Albán, and day-trip to Hierve el Agua or craft towns like Teotitlán del Valle.

3. San Miguel de Allende
A colonial town on UNESCO’s list with cobblestone streets, colonial character, and a huge international art community. Known for the pink Parroquia church, roof terraces, and expat scene. It’s more sophisticated than rough around the edges, and a slower pace than the big cities.
Best for: romance holidays, art, architecture, boutique hotels
4. Guadalajara (Jalisco)
Mexico’s second city, too-often neglected (whether because of non-Spanish speakers’ fear of butchering the name, we don’t know) but full of pride and flavor. It’s the birthplace of mariachi and tequila, a day trip to Tequila town is a must, and the suburbs of Tlaquepaque and Zapopan offer a relaxed, cultural atmosphere.
Best for: music, tradition, day trips, less-touristy city life
5. Mérida (Yucatán)
Cultural capital of the Yucatán Peninsula — colorful colonial cities, Mayan heritage, and among the finest food in the region. A center for cenotes, haciendas, and ruins such as Uxmal, and a safe, charming place to unwind or head inland.
Best for: cenote-hopping, history lovers, hot weather lovers, like, really hot weather
