What to Visit in the South of Italy, Actually Good Spots

Been wondering where to go, what to see, what’s good in the South of Italy? We’re here to help you out with our list of places to visit.

Where in the South of Italy to Visit First? Naples!

The gateway to Southern Italy, Naples, known to be gritty, vibrant, and packed with history. It’s where pizza was born(you knew that), and the chaotic charm of the old town is unmatched. Visit the National Archaeological Museum, explore underground catacombs, and take day trips to Pompeii or Mount Vesuvius. Naples is also your jumping-off point for the Amalfi Coast and Capri. To be completely honest I can see a truly honest Italy Holiday starting and ending here, this place is just that good, beach to that side, mountain here, incredible history there, go home, be happy.

AbroadPulse visit Naples

No matter the unmatched fun, we must move forward, or at least, this post has to, you’re free to stay around Naples (make sure not to join the mafia).

Amalfi Coast, Obviously, One of the Most Beloved Spots in the South of Italy

If what you’re seeking is lovely views, cliff-top towns, and Mediterranean luxury, this is your destination. Positano is renowned for its pastel-hued houses and high-end vibe. Amalfi is a more relaxed experience with a old-fashioned cathedral and beach town charm. Ravello, higher up, offers the finest views and tropical gardens. Go hike the Path of the Gods or just have a view with a glass of limoncello.

Capri, Somehow Still Revolving Naples

Only a short ferry ride from Sorrento or Naples, the much-beloved island of Capri features designer boutiques, breathtaking cliffs, and the Blue Grotto. Chairlift ride up to Monte Solaro, disembarking in Anacapri for a more local atmosphere, and definitely indulge in a boat tour of the island, if that’s your jam anyway.

People Don’t Talk about Calabria (Tropea), but It’s the GOAT

This lesser-known shimmering gem sits on turquoise water with dramatic cliffs and uncrowded beaches. Tropea is beautiful, laid-back, and still affordable, which is just the best combination of factors. It’s perfect for travelers looking to relax without the other 200.000 people or the high prices of the Amalfi Coast.

The Place of Greek Legend, Sicily (Palermo, Taormina, Catania)

This may not work out for everyone as it is farther, therefore needs the extra traveling cash and time. Alas, if you have time to go farther, Sicily is like a country within a country. Palermo has incredible street food and a gritty charm. Taormina is postcard-perfect, with a Greek theater and views of Mount Etna, Hephaestus’ furnace below and all. Catania is raw and energetic, and a good base for Etna hikes or trips to the sea, if you’re a volcano or nature fan, a must visit spot in the South of Italy.
