If you’re planning a trip, here’s where to go to truly get a taste of everything this North African gem has to offer (mint tea not included, but heavily implied), but since time is of the essence, here’s what you really want to visit there. Seriously, if you don’t drink mint tea, do, just beware of… well, this isn’t a health blog, you can figure it out.
Marrakech – The One Place Everyone Really Wants to Visit in Morocco
Even if you haven’t considered a trip to Morocco before, you’ve heard of this one-of-a-kind place, don’t lie. Marrakech is boisterous, vibrant, and probably not what your Pinterest board has prepared you for. The souks are a sensory onslaught of spices, fabrics, and aggressive salesmanship, but half the fun. Stroll through the Medina, then rejuvenate in a riad courtyard with fresh orange juice and rooftop view.
Fes – For Time-Travel Enthusiasts
Honestly, if you’ve seen Marrakech and read the title above, you’ll have a good idea of what kind of place this is. Fes is less polished than Marrakech but more authentic in many ways. The Medina feels medieval because… well, it kind of is, really, it was established during the 9th-10th centuries. You can visit ancient tanneries, madrasas, and markets that make you feel like you’ve slipped back in time , perhaps with Google Maps open, hopefully at least. Oh, and did I mention that it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site? Yeah, I know, it’s what you really want to visit in Morocco.
Merzouga – Necessary Desert Stargazing Moment, Must Visit Once
I might be-no, I am straight up biased, I love stargazing, and light-less deserts are the number one spot for that, so go. It’s going to be your gateway to camel treks, sandboarding, and stargazing over the dunes, this small town on the fringes of the Sahara is your base. The desert camps range from basic to luxurious, but no matter, watching the sunrise over limitless sand is a little spiritual experience. Just prepared for sand where sand shouldn’t be
Essaouira – Beachy, Sunny, Relaxed
Essaouira is a seaside town with Portuguese heritage, white-walled medinas, and hippie, artsy attitude. Blustery enough to discourage the crowds but sunny enough to visit the beach. Visit for the seafood, remain for the lack of catcalling seriously, it’s considerably less tense here. This can serve as the actually relaxing and not draining part of your holiday.
Chefchaouen – Blue Meets Mountains
Tucked in the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen is famous for its calming blue-washed buildings !VERY BLUE ALERT! and mountain views. It’s quieter than the big cities and perfect for leisurely strolls and photos you’ll pretend were candid. Yes, everyone takes the same pictures here and no, it doesn’t make them any less gorgeous. Genuinely, it’s such a magical looking place, especially through good lenses.
Atlas Mountains – Desert Meets Mountains
If you need a break from the frenzy, the Atlas Mountains are cold (literally, and otherwise). Treking here means Berber villages, fresh air, and landscapes that are more Alpine than desert. It’s a great alternative to insert some rest into your regimen, especially if you miss a slower pace.
