To avoid sounding like a broken record, I’ll try to avoid naming the most well-known beaches out there, and you’ll see some international locations make their way on the list as well. So without further ado, these are the best, moodiest, most interesting beaches on the West Coast of the North American Continent (with an added expense score).
Moonstone Beach – California
Halfway between San Jose and Los Angeles, in Cambria, is Moonstone Beach, a peaceful boardwalk, tide pools, and stunning sunsets. Ideal for a relaxed vacation and is usually less expensive than SoCal hotspots. All the jazz minus the price. Expense Level: 6/10
Cannon Beach – Oregon
Controversially enough, I’ll start with a beach NOT located in California. Cannon Beach is known for its stunning rock formations like Haystack Rock, wide sandy shores, and moody Pacific Northwest vibes. It’s artsy, quiet, and ideal for a relaxing coastal escape with boutique shops and scenic walking trails. Expense Level: 5/10

Playa Zicatela – Oaxaca, Mexico
Located in Puerto Escondido, Playa Zicatela is Mexico’s crown jewel for surfers, with massive waves and a laid-back coastal vibe. While it’s popular among the surf crowd, it’s still less commercial than resort-heavy beaches. Food and lodging range from cheap to mid-range, depending on the season. Perfect for the US traveler, price-wise.Expense Level: 4/10
Pfeiffer Beach – California
Unfortunately, not as pocket-friendly, hidden in Big Sur, Pfeiffer Beach stands out with its purple sand and rock archways. It’s lesser-known and has a secret vibe, but access can be tricky, and lodging nearby is often upscale. Expense Level: 9/10
Long Beach – British Columbia, Canada
Ah, heaven on Earth, situated on Vancouver Island in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, Long Beach offers stunning views, misty forests, and endless stretches of sand, you just can’t lose in Vancouver, man. It’s popular with surfers and nature lovers and feels like a remote retreat even during tourist season. Canada isn’t cheap, but this beach has a mix of camping and modest stays nearby, everything for everyone. Expense Level: 6/10
Cape Arago State Park – Oregon
This is my personal preference, in this state park, you get dramatic cliffs, seal-watching, and multiple beaches all in one area. It’s far less known than Cannon or other Oregon gems, but it offers dramatic Pacific views and trails. It’s also much cheaper, and you get a unique, nature-filled experience at an expense level of: 3/10
La Jolla Shores – California
The location is very convenient as it is in San Diego, where La Jolla Shores offers gentle waves, sea caves, and excellent kayaking or snorkeling. It’s popular with families and outdoor enthusiasts who want scenic beauty and wildlife. Lovely activity range, really. Expense Level: 7/10
We hope that our list helped you find the best West Coast beach for you, and we’ll catch you later on Instagram
